New National TV Ad Calls Attention to Failing Pensions of Essential Blue-Collar Workers

Without Urgent Action by Congress, Frontline Workers Could Lose Their Retirement Benefits

WASHINGTON, DC – The Retirement Security Coalition, a diverse group of employers, labor unions, associations, and policy experts dedicated to finding a common-ground solution to the multiemployer pension crisis, today launched a comprehensive advertising campaign urging lawmakers to protect the multiemployer pensions of essential blue-collar workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ad is part of a national six figure digital and television buy to raise awareness about why pension reform cannot wait. Ten million Americans – including essential workers and retirees – belong to multiemployer pension plans, more than 110 of which are in critical or declining status despite following federal guidelines. The multiemployer pension system has also faced new shocks from the economic conditions created by the pandemic. The :30 second ad can be viewed by clicking HERE or on the screenshot below.

The media push comes on the heels of a new poll released by the Retirement Security Coalition last week showing 2 in 3 voters (67%) believe Congress cannot afford to wait any longer to address the multiemployer pension crisis. Additionally, broad majorities of Democrats (79%), Republicans (67%), and Independents (61%) said they would be more inclined to vote for a U.S. senator who would protect and fix multiemployer pensions for the essential workers who have been putting their lives at risk and working during COVID-19. The poll surveyed 3,000 likely general election voters in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
